Health is a good thing. In the New Year, those of us with two legs often make resolutions to eat less, exercise more and do good things for mankind. Let's pay attention to our beloved four legged family members.
There are many household materials and plants that can be potentially poisonous to pets such as chocolate, antifreeze and poinsettia leaves. These are pretty well know to most of us. A newer poison is sweetener in the form of Xylitol. This is a naturally occurring sweetener that is often used in beverages and sugar-free gums.
If your dog ingests Xylitol, call your veterinarian immediately. Signs of distress and toxicity might be weakness, tremors and seizures. This is caused by low blood sugar and the release of massive amounts of insulin. Dogs might also experience gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting diarrhea. Loss of appetite and extreme lethargy might be apparent. No dog will react in the same manner. Get your babe to the vet! Immediately!
