How painful  it is to lose a beloved pet. Our pets become something special and are true members of our family: they are our children. On Oct 12, 2006 Rodica Stoicoiu lost her beautiful Basset Hound, Olivia, after 14 years of loyal and loving companionship. This poem was written for Olivia and Rodica by Club Member Cynthia P Baker, our very talented, poet-in-residence.

For Rodica & Olivia, and, one day, for Cass....By Cynthia P Baker
Sweetest Dreams
Matriarch of the pack,
She lies sleeping in the sun.
Life has been good to her
And she has no fears,
Only the grey hairs of a
Long life graced with
Good treats and love.
Her naps grow gently longer
Now and in her dreams she
Runs unfettered by reality.
When she wakes, she wants
Only the feel of a loving hand
And then she slips back
To a world of youth.
My good puppy, my darling girl,
For years the keeper of my heart,
Sleep on, love, and run in
The fields of infinity.
                                 My Hound

                              by Cynthia P.Baker

As she lies in a pool of sunlight
I study the warm face of my hound,
Seeing past, present and future
In her soft brown eyes.

Calm acceptance of past mistakes,
Puppyhood gone in precious months
With old chewies and silent squeekies,
Fears forgotten with reassurances.

Anticipation of treats now.
Counter cruising for promising scents,
Living in the moment and
Joyous reunions at homecoming.

Total innocence of future,
Brown eyes hold mine in
Complete trust that life is good
Because I am in it.
